Game-changing: The secrets behind the ball machines of the skills.lab Arena
Data as a key to the American dream

Arena 4
Four ball machines keep the skills.lab Arena running automatically. A look behind the high-tech components of the world's most modern football training system.

If you want to improve your football skills, you need a partner. In the skills.lab Arena, that partner is the four ball machines. They are an essential part of the high-precision training and assessment system and shine in every situation with the perfect assist.

The rollers in the machines release the balls at exactly the speed that is required at the time. Whether flat in a double pass exercise or high, fast and with spin in a finishing exercise after a cross – the ball machines in the skills.lab Arena work reliably at all times.

When an exercise is started, the player moves into a green circle on the 320 square metre pitch in the Arena. Once the player has positioned themselves correctly, the ball machine starts. The yellow ball rollers start to move and the ball gets ready for the next action.

This is where every ball starts its journey. The rollers inside the ball machine are set in motion and then the action can begin.

Each ball has its target precisely in view and the ball machine sends it to the player with pinpoint accuracy.

Depending on the exercise, the ball arrives at the player flat, high or with a spin. And with a possible speed of up to 130 km/h.

Strike! Here the ball has landed inside the target, then disappears into a ditch below the pitch.

From there, it's back on rails towards the ball machine.

While the exercise continues, the ball lift starts moving behind the pitch. It lifts the balls to lofty heights.

From the ball lift exit, the balls then roll into a ball tube, which is used to sort them back into the four ball machines.

The system takes care of replenishment itself.

If a ball machine has too few balls before an exercise, it automatically receives new balls from one of the other machines.

By positioning the player within the green circle, the ball machine knows exactly where and at what speed it has to deliver the ball. Depending on the exercise, the ball lands precisely on the player. The ball machine can accelerate the ball to a speed of up to 130 km/h.

Most of the exercises in the skills.lab Arena involve hitting a target on one of the canvases. If the ball hits the canvas, it then lands in a ditch underneath the pitch surface. From there, a ball rolls along rails back towards the ball machine.

From the ditch, however, it first goes to lofty heights. The ball lift transports each ball upwards and from there into a ball tube, which is used to easily sort the balls back into the four ball machines.

The ball management system also takes care of replenishment all by itself. Up to 200 balls make it onto the pitch in ten minutes. This makes intensive individual training a reality.

And if one ball machine runs out of balls after an exercise, the four ball machines supply each other with balls. This also happens fully automatically. Endless football fun is guaranteed.

In the skills.lab Arena, a player can achieve in half an hour what might take three or four traditional training sessions on the pitch.
